The Priestess of Morphine

31 Jan - 4 Feb 2023

A short contemporary opera by composer Rosśa Crean and librettist Aiden K. Feltkamp, The Priestess of Morphine was based on the true story of German artist and morphine addict Baroness Gertrud Günther von Puttkamer, and her alter-ego and nom-de-plume Marie-Madeleine, a Jewish writer who published erotic, sapphic poetry in the midst of conservatism and emergent fascism. The Third Reich tried to erase her legacy, but The Priestess of Morphine reclaimed and shared Gertrud’s story. This Australian premier production was performed as part of The Blue Room Summer Nights Season 2023, with support from Lesbians Inc and generous donations to our Australian Cultural Fund. Drug Aware presents: SYMBIOSIS 29/07/2022

Music and poetry collide, with new inter-disciplinary collaborations in response to place.

In collaboration with Propel Youth Arts WA and Healthway, we commissioned local word writers and sound makers to create shared work in response to the natural world. These pieces were presented online as part of KickstART's WA Youth Week, and had their live debut at DADAA Fremantle. From reflections on integrating multiple selves to imagining a future where forests are forgotten due to urban sprawl, this diverse group of young artists have many stories to tell, through music, poetry, and more.

Artists: Lara Pollard, Kieran Fisher, Izzy French, Taonga Sendama, Dakota Jones, Sara Morgillo, David Clarke (Mr Widdy), Nick Huston (SYZYGY).

Ugly Beauty: Celebrating 200 Years of Pauline Viardot

This concert was held on the 18th of July 2021, to commemorate the exact day of Viardot’s 200th birthday, and featured compositions by Maria Malibran, Clara Schumann, Fanny (Mendelssohn-)Hensel, Charlotte Sainton-Dolby, Clémence de Grandval and Josephine Lang alongside Viardot. We were overwhelmed with the amount of people who came, and the the feedback we’ve received since. Thank you so much to everyone that supported us in putting this together.

Our inaugural concert was held on

International Women’s Day 2020

in UWA’s Eileen Joyce Studio.

We were privileged to have a range of friends and UWA students perform repertoire composed over 400 years by a huge array of women - we went from Barbara Strozzi to original, unreleased compositions in just over an hour. It was an intimate but joyful evening, where we raised

funds for

Dress for Success and celebrated all that is to come.
